Bridging the Gap

The ASAQS WSC had a Webinar for all students, discussing the key points of bridging the gap between University and the workplace on the 20th of August 2020

Bridging the gap is a presentation where we spoke to industry professionals about industry executions and the measures we need to take to prepare ourselves for the workplace.

We spoke to PHUMEZA MHLAULI who is a professional Quantity Surveyor at Turner & Townsend and Bridgette HATTINGH who is a professional Quantity Surveyor , Masters Graduate Skills development provider and Mentor

I think the question that was asked frequently is the question about experience. Most job applications require at least 3 years of experience and how does one just starting off fresh from variety secure a job if requirements are so high

Mentorship

CIOB NOVUS GROUP

CIOB NOVUS is a group that prides themselves one preparing graduates for the professional world. Nkanyiso Mbatha project manager organized an online webinar that was set to advice students and professionals on the importance of mentorship in the industry

These are some of the benefits you receive as a member of CIOB NOVUS

We spoke to Iain Cook who studied construction management and is now part of the Radisson Hotel Group. Iain gave us a brief on who a mentor is and what role they play in your career.

From the presentation I can sum up that it is very important to have a mentor and Guide in the construction industry especially if you want to be registered as a professional Quantity Surveyor. “Some who has walked the road before you” this is will be play a big role in ensuring you do not make the same mistakes that people have made. A wise guidance in the write path.

This was a success.

First day of work

I received an email about my internship for the week of my holidays a on the 30th of June 2020.

On the 2nd of July 2020 I was delighted with the opportunity to meet my mentor Willam Townsend who has been in the construction industry for more than 10 years. He walked we through the work planned for the week. We got to familiarize ourselves with the site and the rules and regulations to follow while on site due to Covid 19. We spent about an hour talking about everything and for the next 30 min he showed me how to measure some of the material that I will be expected to measure during my one week program. The buildings are commercial buildings located in Waterfall Ellipse which is an hours drive from where I live. There are essentially 2 buildings that are both being constructed by Barrow Construction.

It was rather a productive day and I was excited for the week ahead. However I received a call the following day regarding the start of my internship program, after a meeting with the board they decided to postpone the program to a different time because of the rapid increase in corona virus cases. As a result I was unable to continue with the week.

But I was positive and hopeful that this soon would come to an end.
