Roofs

Today’s lesson was very deatailed as we managed to the site manger and information give was super informative

A Traditional Timber Trussed roof is used on our site. The timber structure is made up of braces, rafters, tie beams and a king post in the truss and purlins tie the trusses together which all rest on a wall plate. The building is mainly a rectangular shape which has a pitched roof allowing for two slopes running down the long sides and gables at each short side. The law requires a specific 3,7 ‘R’ rating of insulation in Johannesburg in order to reduce energy consumption due to heating and air conditioning within a building. The Sisalation 420 and the Isover Saint-Gobain Glasswool are laid on the underside and between the rafters. To allow easy access to the roof space and free flow of services which might need to be accessed. The eaves also serve as sun shading for the windows. The gutters and downpipes handle water runoff. Gables have a barge board detail and no eaves as no water runs off at the gable-ends.  The eaves on the bottom of the roof ensure that walls are not water damaged.

as for the picture above what a brave man we have here

Foundations

A house must be built on a solid foundation if it is to last

-Sai Baba

Today is an important day on site

Setting out is happening and workers will begin by digging up trenches

Foundation used is the Raft foundation this is because our site doesn’t don’t have load bearing soil. In simpler terms we have weak soil on site. Which will not be able to support a 3 story building

Clearance day

Today’s site visit was really short because it was very important and dangerous task as hand. It was clearance dayyyy💃🏽😅

I don’t know why I’m excited because it’s a good bad. Bad because our trees are being cut down. Good because the process is finally starting .

They say team work divides the task and multiples the success

We have an amazing team on site, everyone is kind and all about the work. I’m never too scared to ask because I know I’ll always get a satisfying response . Here is a picture of our site before, stay tuned for the picture after

Safety on site

Being on site can be such a beautiful experience yet it can be highly dangerous. This is why our foreman ensures that before we go on site we have our safety attire on.Who said quantity surveyors and construction mangers don’t dress up.

Safety gear

  • Hard hat
  • Construction boots
  • Reflective shirt
  • Comfortable clothes for a long day on site

Michel(site manager) was happy to see that my group and I were well prepared for our site visit.
